Phranque and Rue: Faye's Companions in God of War Laufey Explained

God of War Laufey introduces two of the most unusual companions in franchise history — Phranque the gelatinous cube and Rue the enchanted ribbon. Here's everything we know about them.

Every great God of War protagonist needs a companion. Kratos had Atreus. Faye has Phranque and Rue — arguably the most unconventional duo in PlayStation history.

Meet Phranque

Phranque is described as a “curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition.” In practical terms: he is a large, gelatinous, translucent cube — a magical entity who wanders the Everywhen with the enthusiasm of someone who finds everything fascinating.

Phranque is voiced by Jack Quaid (known for The Boys, Star Trek: Lower Decks), bringing a warmth and humor to what could have been a purely comedic character.

What Makes Phranque Unique

Unlike Atreus — who served as Kratos’ mythological guide and emotional anchor — Phranque appears to function as:

Comic relief with depth: His earnest, curious nature provides levity in a realm overflowing with terrifying gods. But the “cosmic cube” description suggests there’s more to him than his goofy exterior implies.

A creature of the Everywhen: Phranque seems native to the realm, giving him knowledge of its rules, its inhabitants, and its dangers that Faye lacks on arrival.

An unexpected protector: Despite his non-threatening appearance, Phranque is presumably resilient enough to survive the Everywhen — no small feat in a realm where gods from every mythology are at war.

Meet Rue

Rue is described as an “enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with protecting a devastating sword.” She is, literally, a ribbon — a length of magical fabric with consciousness, personality, and purpose.

Rue is voiced by Perlina Lau, who brings an intensity to the character that contrasts with Phranque’s cheerfulness.

Rue’s Role in the Story

Rue’s function is clear: she is the guardian of a sword. Not just any sword — the “devastating” sword that becomes Faye’s primary weapon for the entire game.

The relationship between Rue and the sword she protects mirrors the relationship Brok and Sindri had with the Leviathan Axe — deeply personal, professionally dedicated, and more emotionally complex than a simple “weapon keeper” role would suggest.

What Rue must decide is whether Faye is worthy of the weapon she guards. The fact that she ultimately yields it implies either a genuine bond of trust forms between them or extraordinary circumstances force her hand.

The Odd Couple Dynamic

Phranque and Rue are described as an “oddball duo” — and the dynamic between them appears to be central to the game’s lighter moments.

Phranque lives inside Rue’s sword (or alongside it, embedded in his gelatinous form). This creates an involuntary partnership between two very different personalities:

  • Phranque: Open, enthusiastic, curious about everything
  • Rue: Task-focused, serious, defined by her guardianship role

When Faye enters their lives, she doesn’t just gain companions — she becomes the third element in a relationship that was already complicated.

Why These Companions Work

The choice of Phranque and Rue over a more conventional partner for Faye is a deliberate tonal decision.

It signals a different kind of story. God of War (2018) and Ragnarök were fundamentally about fathers and sons — heavy, serious, emotionally intense. Faye’s story, while high-stakes, appears to have more room for wonder and levity. Phranque is literally designed to provoke curiosity and lighten the mood.

It avoids retreading Atreus. If Faye had a human companion — even a mythological one — comparisons to the Kratos/Atreus dynamic would be constant and reductive. A gelatinous cube and an enchanted ribbon are impossible to compare to anything that came before.

It opens up creative space. The Everywhen is a realm of impossible things. Companions who are impossible by any normal standard fit perfectly. Their strangeness normalizes the strangeness of everything around them.

What We Don’t Know Yet

Several key questions about Phranque and Rue remain unanswered:

  • What is Phranque’s actual nature? “Cosmic cube” implies something fundamental about how the Everywhen works.
  • Why was Rue tasked with guarding that specific sword?
  • What happens to them if Faye succeeds in her mission? Can they leave the Everywhen?
  • Do they have connections to the Norse characters we already know?

These are the questions that will make God of War Laufey’s story compelling beyond its action sequences. Santa Monica Studio has a strong track record of making companions feel essential — Atreus, Brok, Sindri, Freya all resonated deeply with players. Phranque and Rue will have large shoes to fill.

Or rather, no shoes — one of them is a cube.
