God of War Laufey: Everything We Know

The complete guide to God of War Laufey — story, gameplay, characters, release date, and every detail from the official reveal. Updated regularly.

God of War Laufey is the next mainline entry in Sony’s legendary God of War franchise, developed by Santa Monica Studio. Announced on June 2, 2026 during PlayStation’s State of Play, the game marks a dramatic shift — for the first time in the series, Kratos is not the playable protagonist.

Instead, you play as Laufey, also known as Faye — Kratos’ deceased wife and the mother of Atreus.

What Is God of War Laufey?

God of War Laufey is an action-adventure game set entirely within a mysterious realm called the Everywhen — described as the afterlife of the gods, a place where deities from every mythology across history converge. The game begins immediately after Faye’s funeral, as she awakens unexpectedly in this strange and dangerous land.

The game was revealed with a full 23-minute gameplay demonstration during the State of Play showcase, making it one of the most detailed game reveals in recent PlayStation history.

The Story So Far

Death was supposed to be the end for Laufey. But something pulls her back.

Awakening inside the Everywhen, Faye discovers that the plans she secretly put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now under threat. The protective network she built before her death is unraveling, and she must fight through an entire realm of warring gods to save the family she left behind.

The Everywhen is described as:

“The birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns — a transcendent realm above those we’ve come to know, where gods and creatures from different mythologies come together.”

The Protagonist: Laufey / Faye

Faye — full name Laufey the Just — was introduced in God of War (2018) through her absence. Players learned about her through Kratos’ grief, the runic carvings she left throughout the world, and eventually the revelation that she had planned the entire journey from Midgard to Jötunheim.

In God of War Laufey, she finally takes center stage. She is portrayed by actress Deborah Ann Woll, who reprises her role and likeness for the game.

Key facts about Faye:

  • Origin: A Jötunn (Giant) from Jötunheim
  • Title: Laufey the Just, Last Guardian of the Jötnar
  • Weapons: A legendary magical sword (obtained in the Everywhen)
  • Special Ability: Soul separation — she can strike enemies to separate their soul from their body, then manipulate the soul directly

Combat System

Where Kratos fights with raw power and brutality, Faye’s combat is described as quick, graceful, and agile. Critics and fans who saw the reveal compared it to a blend of:

  • Devil May Cry 5 — for the aerial fluidity and combo potential
  • Classic God of War — for the visceral, brutal finishing moves

Faye moves seamlessly between ground and air combat without interrupting her attack flow. Her hyper-responsive movement system adds both offensive and defensive tools that Kratos never had access to.

Her signature soul mechanic creates entirely new combat possibilities: once a soul is separated, Faye can damage it directly, exploit its weaknesses, or use it against other enemies.

Companions: Phranque and Rue

Shortly after awakening in the Everywhen, Faye meets two unusual companions:

Phranque — A curious, gelatinous cube with an earnest disposition, voiced by Jack Quaid. Phranque is described as a “cosmic cube” with an oddball personality and deep knowledge of the Everywhen.

Rue — An enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with protecting a devastating magical sword. Voiced by Perlina Lau. Rue is embedded within Phranque, and together they become Faye’s most unlikely allies.

After earning their trust, Faye wields the sword that Rue protects — her primary weapon throughout the game.

Enemies and Mythologies

One of the most exciting aspects of God of War Laufey is its multi-mythology scope. The Everywhen draws gods from across human history, meaning Faye won’t just face Norse enemies.

Confirmed enemies include:

Begtse — The wrathful war deity of Tibetan Buddhism. Begtse is described as a fiery god with explosive combat abilities. His appearance marks the first time a Tibetan mythological figure has been featured in a major AAA game.

Sekhmet — The Egyptian goddess of war and medicine. Sekhmet is depicted as a fierce, leonine warrior who views the Everywhen as her domain and does not welcome intruders.

Platform and Release Date

God of War Laufey is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. No PC version has been announced.

As of the June 2026 reveal, Sony has not confirmed a release date. The game is listed as “release date to be determined.” Based on the amount of gameplay shown and Sony’s typical development timelines, most analysts expect a 2027 release.

Is This a Spin-Off or a Mainline Entry?

This has been a point of debate among fans. Sony and Santa Monica Studio have officially described God of War Laufey as the next mainline entry in the series — not a spin-off. It follows directly after the events of God of War Ragnarök (2022).

Why Fans Are Divided

The announcement generated significant online discussion. Some fans are excited about the fresh perspective and combat style, while others are disappointed that Kratos is not the playable character and expressed concern about the tonal shift.

Regardless of fan reception, the game represents a bold creative decision by Santa Monica Studio to expand the franchise beyond its traditional protagonist.
